chiaroscuro
(ky-aro-skew-ro)

Italian word for "light-dark" is a term in art for a contrast between light and dark. The term is usually applied to bold contrasts affecting a whole composition, but is also more technically used by artists and art historians for the use of effects representing contrasts of light, not necessarily strong, to achieve a sense of volume in modeling three-dimensional objects such as the human body. Further specialised uses of the term are "chiaroscuro woodcut", used for coloured woodcuts printed with different blocks, each using a different coloured ink, and "chiaroscuro drawing" used for drawings on coloured paper with drawing in a dark medium and white highlighting. The term is now also used in describing similar effects in the lighting of cinema and photography.

papyrus
(puh-pahy-ruh-s)

Papyrus is an ancient form of paper, made from the papyrus plant, which grows wild in the marshes of the Nile river and was cultivated for paper-making. Strips from fibrous pith of the papyrus plant were cut and laid together in two layers, one layer running crosswise over the other, and beaten and dried to form a laminated sheet. Interest in traditional art processes, support for community craftspeople, and preference for less processed and environmentally sound materials has led to a small resurgence in production of papyrus and experimentation with similar products, such as banana-leaf paper.
Papyrus seems to have good archival qualities, though can be brittle to handle and must be properly sized for use with most media.

Having a great enthusiasm for the arts and entertainment even as a young kid has prompted me to acquire a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Advertising at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. This education has been my solid foundation in all my creative endeavors. Learning traditional and classical art combined with emerging technology has been a spectacular discovery.

A major portion of my career has been associated with family entertainment and amusement, having worked for major animation studios, one of which produced Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Working on character animations has always sparked my creative imagination while conveying my ideas on an appropriate media. Starting with an interesting thought and putting it on paper or in action with emphasis and exaggeration. These actions come as illustrated as described with gestures and expressions to deliver the story in a most interesting way. Witn an enormous experience on tradional and digital animation, I have worked in a progressive animation studio holding a position of an Assistant Animation Director handling every technical aspects of production. These items included reviewing of storyboards, scene hook ups and unnecessary cuts, proper scene staging and suggested character poses. The position also required project management and delegating a team of animators.

Aside from animation studios, I have worked for Enchanted Kingdom, the Philippine’s first world class theme park. We were 29 scenic artists trained under the auspices of Landmark Entertainment Group. The park covers more than 17 hectares, showcasing more than 20 rides and attractions all situated in seven intricately themed zones. Our work started with months of rigorous training on paint color mixing, scenic design, murals, decorative painting techniques, faux finishes and interesting trompe l’oeil art. All these required great emphasis on shop safety procedure based on industry standards.

My experience from Enchanted Kingdom brought me to another theme park, Robinson’s Dreamscape, a family entertainment center designed by Forrec Ltd. As a member of the marketing team, I was designated to create all theme park decals, informative message boards and developed the theme park mascot. Other responsibilities included sourcing and coordinating with respective service providers such as printers and fabricators, ensuring project specifications and quality standards are achieved. Aside from theme parks, I also had the opportunity to work on murals and decorative paintings for palaces in Manama, Bahrain and a unique restaurant in Manila adorned with animal caricatures.

From animation studios to theme parks, I had the opportunity to work in a number of business process outsourcing companies developing animated and interactive advertisements for offshore clients.

My other interests include photography and playing the violin.
